What is a Subliminal Message?
Webster’s Dictionary: Subliminal – relating to things that influence your mind in a way that you do not notice
A subliminal message is a visual or auditory message that the brain does not consciously register, but does subconsciously understand.
Subliminal programming is a simple method used to place pre-determined thoughts, suggestions or ideas into the subconscious mind. It is also used to reinforcing pre-existing information already stored in the subconscious. These types of messages can allow the subconscious mind to focus and influence the conscious decision making or thought process.
For example: Have you ever thought you “heard” your phone ringing or a knock at the front door while listening to loud music only to have a feeling that made you turn turn down the music and find out the phone is really ringing or someone is at the door? Then you have experienced a subliminal message. The sound of the loud music drowned out the other conscious sounds, forcing the sound to be received just below the threshold of conscious perception, but the knocking door or ringing phone still prompted (or reinforced) your desire to take action.
Subliminal messages can be both auditory or visual. Auditory messages are recorded above the normal conscious hearing range of sound while visual images can either be moving very fast (as in movies) or stationary (as in hidden messages).
Confidence is the foundation that all Alpha skills are built on. We have looked at building confidence through physical and mental consciousness like diet and exercise, reframing limiting beliefs, learning to see reality through minimized mental distortions, etc. We will also learn actions to take and specific strategies as well. Building skills takes time, mainly because the conscious mind will “keep” interfering with the process through filters or the subconscious will not accept the direction of the new conscious program because the conscious does not yet “believe” the new programs.
We need to use all of these skills so we learn to see each interaction in a new paradigm and change our belief system so that we have the most increased probability of demonstrating high Alpha traits.
One major tool we can use to help rapidly focus and train our mind is through subliminal messages that speak directly to the subconscious. When these techniques are used with reframes to remove limiting beliefs our confidence levels (or any other skill we wish to focus on) rapidly improve. By using subliminal messages we can rapidly speed up our skill learning ability – from months down to only weeks.
Your subconscious literally operates your behavior when you are not mentally focused on a particular task (conscious), so by using subliminal messages we can rapidly change our behavior. At the end of this section I will give you dozens of prerecorded subliminal messages with the messages already written and in them. I will also show you how to create your own.
I personally listen to subliminal messages daily. So do you, it’s just that mine are personally focused, and yours are likely media or advertisement driven.
Subliminal Message And Behavior
Can Subliminal Messaging Really Work?
“Absolutely,” says Jagdish Sleth, the President of the American Psychological Association’s Division on Consumer Psychology. “The controversy has always been over changing people’s attitudes. That you can’t do! What you can do is trigger a prior attitude or disposition.” – Mind Programming by Eldon Taylor
I have tested subliminal messaging in my own life (and my son’s) and it does work, though different methods have different success rates. Through my research subliminal messages seem to work IF they are reinforcing something you already want to do or they are not suggesting you do something you don’t want to do.
Remember, it’s not just our conscious thinking, but also our subconscious patterns that often holds the key to our behavior and limiting beliefs. By taping directly into the subconscious we can shorten the learning curve for change. Your beliefs, thoughts, attitudes and behaviors that you hold at the deepest levels of your mind, as well as your conscious thoughts create the life you have today. The subconscious influences how you see everything and can be the difference in a life of abundance and Alpha, or destruction and want.
Think about it this way… It is not outside influences that are preventing you from interacting with a woman so as to create attraction and develop sexual tension. Your own thoughts and beliefs are. Our lives are nothing more than a combination of internal thoughts and external communication.
Personal subliminal programming is a fast method to remove negative thoughts, attitudes, habits and behaviors and communicate desired characteristics directly to the subconscious that will affect conscious change.
Using subliminal messages will allows you to access the subconscious mind to ease the years of nonproductive programming from the TV, radio, newspaper, friends, relatives, work and even family. It can be used to create a solid internal and external persona that will reflect a more Alpha and naturally masculine energy.
Without changing these patterns on a subconscious level, we will find we keep slipping back into well-worn patterns of our Beta habits.
Does it always work 100%. No, that has not been proven. However, a recent study has proved that showing the message “Eat Beef” doesn’t actually induce a craving for beef. It does, however, increase general sandwich like consumption. A consumer’s “preference hierarchy” can’t be changed by these methods, however mental road maps and influences can be impacted.
Another interesting example is that of using subliminal imagery to add “horror” to a scary movie. Subliminal techniques were employed in the film “The Exorcist”. The subliminal messages were apparently effective enough in inciting enough fear and terror that the Warner Brothers was sued in a $350,000 lawsuit for injuries sustained by a viewer when he fainted and broke his jaw shortly after seeing a subliminal death mask. The suit was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money. These subliminal images are common place in movies today.
On another interesting note, William Blatty, the author of the novel “The Exorcist” is a former CIA operative who served as the Policy Branch Chief of Psychological Warfare Division of the United States Air force. Do you think he understood the power of subliminal messages in creating one of the best horror movies of all time?
According to previously classified documents, the CIA tested subliminal manipulation in movie theaters during the late 1950’s and a document on these studies speculated “that subliminal projection can be utilized in such a way as to feature visual suggestion” The extent of the CIA research is unknown (trust me, I really tried to get the detailed results).
Many scientific studies have proven that if the subconscious mind is intentionally programmed with accepted thoughts and ideas, that soon the conscious mind will begin to act with the information it has received. These new thoughts and ideas will be reflected into the communication and behavior or the subject.
Said another way, I can’t make you “want” to be Alpha, confident or masculine. However, if you desire these traits, then subliminal messages can erase old mental programing and install new more powerful programing along the lines of what you desire.
Be aware, the conscious mind can reject an idea, which, as we discussed, is why affirmations may not work so well. In reading and focusing on the affirmation, the conscious brain can reject the new thought if it does not believe it is true. The subconscious mind, by its very nature, cannot tell truth, it just accepts patterns so it can and will accept the information, which is not audible/visible to the conscious mind.
Subliminal messages enter the brain at a level high enough for the subconscious mind to see, hear and understand, but a low enough frequency so that the conscious mind is not aware and will not block them. In this way, subliminal messages are able modify behaviors that even sheer will and force of mental thought will not. These messages go directly to behavior modification without the conscious filter.
Subliminal messaging impacts the subconscious in 3 major ways:
- By enlivening and activating wishes and desires already present in one’s unconscious.
- By imparting new and useful information into one’s unconscious mind.
- By increasing one’s unconscious selective attention while increasing the power of awareness.
Using subliminal messages, we are able to remove negative thoughts, limiting beliefs, unwanted behaviors and habits while communicating new desirable thoughts and behavioral suggestions directly into the subconscious mind. Keep in mind, the subconscious mind cannot cause behavior contrary to a person’s subconscious motives, drives and rejected mental roadmaps. In short, just like hypnosis, a subliminal message cannot force anyone act in a way they don’t want to act…
but if they DO want to act that way….
Subliminal messages only reinforce and trigger subconscious desires, drives and values or through positive reinforcement, and make them more influential on automatic behavior (habits).
Subliminal Message Examples In Real Life
In Disney’s “The Beauty And The Beast” skulls flash in Gaston’s eyes while he is falling from the tower. It happens too fast to see without going frame by frame.
Hidden messages formed by the first letters of each line is also a well-known subliminal trick as you can see on this tombstone.
I guess John wasn’t very liked by the buyer.
Ever seen “The Manchurian Candidate”? In this screenshot at 1:12:40 the number “666” is etched on Denzel’s forehead:
While it is not exactly subliminal, it is rather close in this “Blade” movie poster.
Or take this hidden dollar in this KFC sandwich. This is the $1 dollar KFC snacker.
Better yet, what do you think Burger King is trying to imply sexually about this meal?
And BK isn’t the only one. Feel like enjoying a Coke?
Here is a great video from
This is an interesting video that is believed to be true, though there is some debate as to which video was actually used in 1960.
Subliminal Preparation – Measuring Brainwaves
Have you ever heard anyone refer to mental states as “vibrations”?
Many neural psychologist and doctors refer to states as vibrations due to the energy the brain generates in these states.
As we feel, learn, experience and focus on our reality, our brain generates different amounts of energy and activity in different regions. This vibration of energy is measured as brainwaves. The different brainwaves focus energy in specific frequencies which can increase how fast we learn but also increase how long we retain the lesson.
Currently, United States Drone Pilots go through months and months of training to learn how to pick out the difference between a military and civilian target very rapidly. To learn this skill, the pilot must utilize their subconscious on automatic pilot. Recent test have shown that by stimulating the exact areas of the brain a skilled pilot activates during a mission, a new pilot can dramatically reduce the training time. From months to weeks.
That is why we will also add in brainwave frequencies into our subliminal messages.
An EEG (electroencephalograph) machine records and measures brainwaves of different frequencies within the brain via the scalp. Electrodes are placed on specific sites on the scalp to detect and record the neuron impulses within the brain. The electric potential generated by a single individual neuron is too small to be registered by EEG so activity always reflects the summation of the total synchronous activity of millions of neuron activity that have similar frequencies. A frequency is simply the number of times a wave repeats itself within a period of time, in this case a second and is referenced by Hz or Hertz.
An EEG is usually been described in terms of frequency bands:
- Gamma is greater than 30 Hz
- BETA is between 13-30Hz
- ALPHA is between 8-12 Hz
- THETA is between 4-8 Hz
- DELTA is less than 4 Hz.
For example: Our brain uses around 13 Hz (Beta) for active conscious thinking, problem solving, concentration and forming an ideal. Frequently individuals who exhibit some learning disabilities or attention problems have a deficiency of the 13 Hz activity in different brain regions that control the ability to easily perform sequencing tasks and math calculations.
DELTA Brainwaves (0.1 to 3.5 Hz)
These are the lowest brain frequencies. They are less than 4 Hz and typically occur in deep sleep or some abnormal processes. This is the dominant rhythm of infants for up 12 months of age. Delta frequencies are present in stages 3 and 4 of sleep. It tends to be the highest in amplitude (maximum extent of vibration) and the slowest oscillation.
Humans increase Delta waves to decrease our mental awareness of the physical world. This is also where we access information in our unconscious mind. Incredible athletes decrease Delta waves when high focus and peak performance are required. On the other end of the spectrum, most individuals diagnosed with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) naturally increase (rather than decrease) Delta activity when trying to focus. This inappropriate Delta response tends to restrict the ability for a human to focus and maintain attention.
Another way for you to think of the Delta frequency is to imagine you are in a car and you shift into 1st gear – great for low power, but you are not going to go fast. Delta brainwaves would represent 1st gear.
DELTA (0.1-3 Hz): Distribution: generally broad or diffuse; may be bilateral, widespread
- Subjective feeling states: deep, dreamless sleep, non-REM sleep, trance, unconscious
- Associated tasks & behaviors: lethargic, not moving, not attentive
- Physiological correlates: not moving, low-level of arousal
- Effects of training: can induce drowsiness, trance, deeply relaxed states
THETA Brainwaves (4-8 Hz)
Theta activity has a frequency of about 4 to 8 (some sources ay 3.5 to 7.5) Hz and is classed as “slow” activity. It is seen in connection with creativity, intuition, daydreaming, and fantasizing and is a repository for memories, emotions, and sensations.
Theta waves are strong during quite periods like meditation, prayer, and spiritual awareness. It reflects the state between wakefulness and sleep as it relates to the subconscious mind. It is abnormal in fully awake adults but is perfectly normal in children up to 13 years old. It is also very normal during sleep.
Theta is believed to reflect activity from the limbic system and hippocampal regions of the brain. Theta frequencies are observed during anxiety, behavioral activation and behavioral inhibition. When the theta rhythm appears to function normally it mediates or promotes adaptive, complex behaviors such as memory and learning.
In our example, Theta waves would be second gear. Faster than first, with less torque.
THETA (3.5-7.5 Hz): Distribution: usually regional, may involve many lobes, can be lateralized or diffused
- Subjective feeling states: intuitive, creative, recall, fantasy, imagery, creative, dreamlike, switching thoughts, drowsy; “oneness”, “knowing”
- Associated tasks & behaviors: creative, intuitive; but may also be distracted, unfocused
- Physiological correlates: healing, integration of mind/body
- Effects of Training: if enhanced, can induce drifting, trance-like state. If suppressed, can improve concentration, ability to focus attention
ALPHA Brainwaves (8-12 Hz)
Alpha brainwaves are those between 8 and 12(Hz). Normal or healthy alpha production promotes mental resourcefulness, aids in the ability to mentally coordinate, and enhances overall sense of either relaxation and fatigue. In this state you can move quickly and efficiently to accomplish whatever you focus on. When Alpha is the primary state most people feel at ease calm and confident.
Alpha waves appear to bridge the conscious to the subconscious. It is the rhythm seen most of the time in normal relaxed adults and it is present during most of the human life cycle, especially after the thirteenth year when it dominates the resting tracing. Alpha rhythms are believed to be emitted from the white matter of the brain. This white matter is considered the linking part of the brain that connects all individual parts with each other.
Alpha is a common state for the brain and occurs whenever a person is but not actively processing information. They are strongest over the occipital (back of the head) cortex and also over frontal cortex. Alpha frequencies have been linked to extroversion personality traits (introverts show less), creativity (creative subjects show alpha when listening and coming to a solution for creative problems), and mental work. When your alpha is within normal ranges you also tend to also experience good moods, see reality truthfully, and have a sense of calm.
Alpha is one of the brain’s most important frequency to learn and use information all through life. You can physically increase alpha by closing your eyes or deep breathing. Physically decreasing alpha requires focused thinking or calculating. Alpha-Theta training can create an increase in abstract thinking, self-control and sensation.
Think of Alpha as idle or not in gear. Everything is in steady state and ready.
ALPHA(8-12 Hz): Distribution: regional, usually involves entire lobe; strong occipital w/eyes closed
- Subjective feeling states: relaxed, not agitated, but not drowsy; tranquil, conscious
- Associated tasks & behaviors: meditation, no action
- Physiological correlates: relaxed, healing
- Effects of Training: can produce relaxation
- Sub band low alpha: 8-10: inner-awareness of self, mind/body integration, balance
- Sub band high alpha: 10-12: centering, healing, mind/body connection
BETA Brainwaves (12 – 30 Hz)
Beta activity is considered a ‘fast’ activity. It has a frequency of 12 and 30 Hz. It reflects desynchronized active brain tissue. It is usually seen on both sides on the brain in symmetrical distribution and is most evident in the frontal area. It may be absent or reduced in areas of cortical damage.
It is generally regarded as a normal rhythm and is the dominant frequency in those who are alert, anxious or who have their eyes open.
Beta is the state that most of the brain is in when we have our eyes open and are listening or thinking during any analytical problem solving, making a judgment, decision making, or processing information about the world around us.
Beta would be considered “drive” or over-drive in our car analogy.
Since the beta frequency band has a relatively large range, it has been divided into low, midrange and high.
LOW BETA (12-15HZ): Distribution: localized by side and by lobe (frontal, occipital, etc)
- Subjective feeling states: relaxed yet focused, integrated
- Associated tasks & behaviors: low SMR can reflect “ADD”, lack of focused attention
- Physiological correlates: is inhibited by motion; restraining body may increase SMR
- Effects of Training: increasing SMR can produce relaxed focus, improved attentive abilities,
MID BETA (15-18hz): Distribution: localized, over various areas. May be focused on one electrode
- Subjective feeling states: thinking, aware of self & surroundings
- Associated tasks & behaviors: mental activity
- Physiological correlates: alert, active, but not agitated
- Effects of Training: can increase mental ability, focus, alertness
HIGH BETA (above 18hz): Distribution: localized, may be very focused
- Subjective feeling states: alertness, agitation
- Associated tasks & behaviors: mental activity, e.g. math, planning
- Physiological correlates: general activation of mind & body functions
- Effects of Training: can induce alertness, but may also produce agitation
GAMMA Brainwaves (above 30 Hz)
The Gamma frequency is measured between 30 and 44 Hz and is the only known frequency group found in all parts of the brain. When the brain needs to simultaneously process or access information in different areas, its hypothesized that the 40Hz activity consolidates the required areas for simultaneous processing. A good memory is associated with well-regulated and efficient 40 Hz activity. Lower than a 40 Hz Gamma frequency creates or demonstrates learning disabilities.
GAMMA (above 30hz Hz): Distribution: very localized
- Subjective feeling states: thinking; integrated thoughts
- Associated tasks & behaviors: high-level information processing, “binding”
- Physiological correlates: associated with information-rich task processing
- Effects of Training: not known
